Selecting a Native American Style Flute

If you are new to the flute, perhaps the first thing to consider when selecting your first flute is size, which means both length and diameter. One feature of Raven Song Flutes is that regardless of key, the playing holes are always spaced the same distance apart. The location of the holes will vary depending on the key. The lower the key, the longer the flute and the playing holes will end up further from the bird. (see picture)

In the picture above, the top flute is a low B, it is 26 inches long and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The flute at the bottom is a high B and sounds similar to a penny whistle. It is 17 inches long and is 7/8 of an inch in diameter. This gives you an idea of flute size.

For a beginner, I recommend a flute in the key of G, F or F#. These flutes are average in size, fit most people very well and have the tone you are probably most familiar with. For someone who already has at least one flute, I have flutes ranging from high B at seventeen inches long with a 5/8 inch bore, to low B at 28 inches long with a 1 1/4 inch bore.

All of my flutes are keyed to both mode 1 and mode 4 of the pentatonic scale. Each flute has its own character and personality as it emerges from the wood. Some have clear tones with good volume while others will have a slight airy tone with less volume. I have learned that in making flutes, I am merely an instrument guiding the tools. The final outcome is decided by the wood and the flutes' spirit. Two flutes, made exactly the same way and to the same specifications will come out sounding differently.
